Heads Up

Welcome to Heads Up, your one-stop source for news about your son’s upcoming activities and events.

A message from Year 2

The Year 2 boys continue to be abuzz with healthy happenings in and out of the classroom.

Through our “Healthy Me” inquiries, we’re getting a solid understanding of how our actions, both positive and negative, can affect our wellbeing. We’ve had fun making smoothies and home-made pretzels, and documenting the steps involved in their creations. Nurse Gina Suva came in and taught us about germs and proper hand-washing techniques. Ask your son about her magic light and how we saw our pretend germs while using it.

Lara Jensen led the boys in a great discussion about the negative effects of too much screen time, and the boys designed some great action posters addressing this topic and suggesting alternative choices instead of playing games on their iPads and computers.

We also talked about the importance of getting enough rest and, during our health and life skills program, we tackled the idea of emotional health, the many types of emotions that we feel, and how these feelings contribute to our overall sense of well-being. We’re going to learn about the importance of protecting our skin and how regular visits to the dentist helps to protect our teeth. Thank you for sending in all of the wonderful, healthy recipes. Sophie Lurz and I have been enjoying reading them, and the boys received their personal cookbooks earlier this week. Happy cooking and eating.

The 2F “At Home Reading Program” was sent home at the beginning of the month. As outlined in the introduction letter, please help your son to plan ahead when completing the two activities. A helpful hint may be to organize two specific days in the agenda for him to complete a different activity. This way he won’t be left scrambling to get them done at the last minute and will be able to put his best effort forward. If your reading package becomes misplaced, please don’t hesitate to get a new one from me. If your son requires assistance in locating appropriate reading material, please contact Pam Love or me. We can arrange a library visit together.

The boys and I are having great fun documenting their learning through Seesaw. Thanks to everyone for signing up so quickly. As we navigate this new portfolio platform, I hope you’re enjoying their portfolio entries. They love it when you “like” and comment on their work immensely. Please don’t forget to check out my classroom blog, where I give examples of our learning and the rationale behind what we do.

Did your boys tell you that 2F is getting a baby? Ask your son to share this exciting news and ask him who baby Andrew belongs to. More details about this exciting opportunity for our class will come home soon.

I look forward to meeting with you tomorrow at our parent-teacher settling-in conferences.

Wednesday, Oct. 18 is our first visit to Norval. It will be a great day of outdoor exploration and yummy apple tasting.
