Message from Year 1
The Year 1 students are fully engaged in our unit of inquiry, Structures. The central idea of this unit is Communities have built features to support our needs. As a class, we discussed the needs of a community and the structures that are built to support those needs. We enjoyed our virtual visit from the Scientist in School and have explored the concepts of strength, stability, form and function. Next, each student will choose a structure that they will create in art class. Once their structures are developed, we will use their newly built creations and knowledge to build an effective community. We will consider the placement of their structure, providing accessibility to the user and needs of a community in this step of our final project.
Try asking your child about his art structure with the following prompts:
- What structure are you building?
- Who will use your structure and what are some of its special features?
- Why do communities need this structure?
- What materials will you use to create your structure?
In math we have been learning about simple fractions by dividing shapes and groups of objects into equal parts. We are consolidating the skill of identifying and writing fractions through math games, workbook pages, and using a variety of manipulatives. Next, we will explore money. The students will be identifying coins and adding change together. This is an excellent opportunity to find real-world applications of these skills.
Some fun ideas to practise counting coins at home:
Arrange wiggly lines of coins on paper and draw legs and antennae to make “coin caterpillars.” Help your kids add up the value of each coin caterpillar. This activity teaches young children basic addition, how to recognize different coins, and their value.
Take a trip to the store — COVID edition (online and/or with a delivery option)
Grocery shopping might seem like a chore for you, but your kids can learn a lot about money from a trip to the store (online or otherwise) with you! Explain how you earn money to buy things. Set a budget and try to stick to it. Talk about how you reach purchase decisions, including the difference between expensive and cheap, and wants and needs. Play shop together to reinforce what you talk about.
Have your kids create some pretend money, then give them advertorial flyers from their favourite store and let them “spend” $50 of pretend cash. Review the value of their “purchases” together and discuss budgeting, wise spending, and wants and needs.
Our Learning without Tears printing practice has come to a close. The students had explicit instructions on how to form letters correctly with much practise in their printing journals. Going forward, the Year 1 students are expected to use their best printing on a daily basis and refer to our Writing Checklist regularly. You can use this checklist at home as well to foster a continuum of one of our classroom routines and encourage independence and self-editing skills. Some key facts on our checklist include:
- Neatest printing
- Correctly formed letters
- Capital letters
- Finger spaces between words and personal space between letters.
