A message from Year 1

We are thoroughly enjoying reading a variety of stories including fairy tales, fractured fairy tales and fables in our new unit of inquiry called “Tell Me a Story.”

During this unit, our focus is on how people share stories to inform and/or entertain. The boys have been introduced to their new creative writing notebooks where they can brainstorm ideas, write stories and create illustrations during transitional times in our day. It has been most entertaining for the whole class as many students choose to share what they have written with the group. They will continue to read, write and tell different kinds of stories in January.

The boys have started writing their own creative stories and have been diving into the writing process over the last week. They will be working alongside Ms. Kastellic during art class to create beautiful illustrations for their books. Once their books are bound and ready to share, we hope to invite parents in to celebrate our hard work. Look for an invitation to our book launch party in the new year.

As the boys move from level to level in their home reading, they are finding the books are longer. The expectation to read approximately 10 to 15 minutes a night has not changed. The longer text can take two to three days to complete. Keep the book at home until it is finished. Once you are finished with the book, please make sure it makes its way back to the 1G classroom. If you can take a few minutes at home to ensure all classroom books have been returned I would greatly appreciate it.

Be watching for the Norval permission form on the agenda the first week back. We will be heading out to Norval on Friday, Jan. 25, 2019.

In math, we continue to be engaged in measurement and have also added new time telling phrasing to our ever-growing vocabulary. We have been working with “quarter before ___” and quarter after ___” on the analog clock. Looking ahead to unit five, we will be focusing on place value, number stories and continuing with basic facts.

Upcoming dates:
Jan. 8: First day back after winter break
Jan. 25: Norval

I want to take this time to wish all the families a safe and happy holiday.
