2F update on learning

Dear 2F families, 

As we track our approach to our 100th day of school during our daily number talk, it is hard to forget how close we are to Family Day weekend and March Break. These are important markers in the year because they serve as a reminder that our boys should now be consolidating many of the expectations in Year 2 as they rapidly approach summer and Year 3. 

Thank you all for taking the time out of your day to attend the three-way conferences last week. It was a great opportunity to speak with you all and to ensure that the boys know their parents and teachers are on the same page. While much of our focus naturally falls towards grades and levels, it is refreshing to be able to put a human touch on the assessment by communicating goals and expectations face to face. Thank you all for your continued partnership in the development of our boys. 

In an attempt to focus on a variety of learning goals associated with reading, the boys continue their guided reading in small groups. All boys show the benefits of both individualized time and appropriately levelled readers. In class, we focus on recalling and recording information from what they have read. Specifically, we are learning to interpret the big idea from the text and to record the pertinent information in written form.

In Math, we wrapped up our geometry unit and put away the marshmallows and toothpicks! These skills will continue to be used in our mapping unit as we discuss designing maps using straight lines and using different polygons as symbols to represent places. The boys are starting to solve word problems using addition and subtraction. This incorporates the skills they previously practiced and utilizes their reading skills in math class. Our strategy includes: 

  1. Reading first – with your eyes only.
  2. Identify the question
    • What are you looking for? 
    • What information do you have? Highlight or circle the information. 
  3. Set up a complete sentence for your answer (This solidifies the understanding of what is being asked for).
  4. Write a number model.
  5. Solve and answer the question

During inquiry the boys start learning about the elements of maps and continue to use maps to develop a better understanding of their community and world. We look forward to sharing the mapping projects with you by the start of March Break.
