Visit to Belmont House for seniors

Year 2 boarders travelled three subway stops south and entered a world considerably different than the fast-paced, daily lifestyle they’ve become accustomed to at UCC, on Friday, May 26. Belmont House is home to more than 200 residents, five minutes from the Rosedale subway station. Belmont House opened its doors for business in 1852 as a place for women to live when released from prison. It’s in this spirit that Belmont House proactively seeks new ways to contribute to the care of seniors, sharing expertise and resources in partnership with organizations with similar goals. Thanks to the work of Deirdre Timusk in her role as director of community service and CAS, UCC is developing a great relationship that allows students to share time with elderly residents each month.

Eleven boarders joined an afternoon art class. Professional painters were on hand to demonstrate and teach new skills; UCC students joined in to assist the resident painters and share stories about life as residential students at the College. It was definitely a win-win situation for all participants. UCC students were able to sharpen their painting skills, while spending time with a group of vibrant seniors they wouldn’t meet in the halls of Seaton’s and Wedd’s. I sensed the residents of Belmont House enjoyed sharing time with a group of teenagers – not an every day occurrence in their home.
