UCC-BSS charity car wash

UCC and The Bishop Strachan School boarders teamed together to facilitate a successful charity car wash on Sept. 24.

The event ran from 10:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. and might have had the best car wash weather we’ve ever experienced. There was lots of sunshine and a temperature hovering over 30C put car owners in a great frame of mind to donate. It also motivated car washers to put a great shine on all the cars that drove in the Kilbarry Road entrance.

A great deal of thanks goes to UCC and BSS boarders who created the signage, and to Edgar Friars for organizing hoses and nozzles so that we could make the event happen. More than 20 students from BSS washed cars, and we’re proud to say that almost every one of the 88 UCC boarders contributed to car washing, creating signs or talking to prospective customers at the corner of Kilbarry and Avenue Road.

The event was a complete success. The team raised almost $1,000 that will be donated to the Red Cross to support hurricane relief efforts in Texas, Louisiana and Florida. Some of the money will also be directed toward efforts to assist citizens in Mexico City that had homes destroyed by the Sept. 19 earthquake. Almost a week following that earthquake, only one per cent of the schools have re-opened. That statistic is particularly alarming to UCC boys, especially the four current boarders who hail from the Mexico City region.
