UCC and BSS video project about sexual consent and communication

Last year a group of workshop leaders from CANVAS worked with UCC through: a workshop with Year 8 through 12 boarders; a survey of and subsequent assembly for all of Year 12 students; and a small group workshops for all of Year 12 students.

We’ve arranged to have them again this year for: a full Upper School assembly on Monday, Nov. 27 and small group discussions and workshops with all Year 12 students on Tuesday, Feb. 27

In planning for this upcoming program, we’ll launch a student survey, as we did leading up to last year’s pilot program, to allow CANVAS to tailor the content to the boys and the specific social forces that they feel are at play in their lives.

Furthermore, we would like to make a short video, with a mixture of UCC and The Bishop Strachan School students, that answers some of the student survey questions, such as:

  • Have you or someone you know ever had photos of themselves shared without their permission?
  • Have you or someone you know ever done something they would not normally do after consuming alcohol or other substances?
  • Have you or someone you know ever thought an experience they had may not have been consensual, but worried you/they were overreacting?

The video would be shown at the start of our special assembly as a way to galvanize the audience and get students focused on the topic at hand. This has worked well in the past with a great video (also featuring UCC and BSS students) about “the N-word.” It was shown in one of our assemblies, was only a few minutes long, and was very impactful and inspired some really excellent follow-up advising conversations

I’m going to ask for student volunteers from all Upper School grade levels to be in the film, and BSS will do the same. If your son offers to participate in this important initiative, I’ll contact you to get parental consent. If you wish to discuss this video project with your son now, perhaps even to encourage him to get involved, I’d be greatly appreciative. The likely filming date will be Friday, Nov. 3 during the day. That’s a parent-teacher interview day for us, with no classes being held.

Thanks very much.
