Special First Year Programs at University of Toronto

As Canada’s largest post-secondary institution, the University of Toronto offers tremendous academic depth and breadth but can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially for first-year students.  This is why the university is committed to providing programs that “make the big small.”

All seven colleges in the Faculty of Arts and Science and the Munk School of Global Affairs offer distinctive first-year programs to help with the transition to university, emphasizing critical thinking, speaking and writing skills, and close interpersonal relationships with peers and professors. The College One programs typically combine one or more theme-based courses with guest lectures and experiential learning opportunities. Students may apply to the program at their own or any other college; a supplemental application is required.

Check out the College One Programs website for more details.

Students in commerce, economics, humanities, social sciences, actuarial science, computer science, mathematics, and life sciences can choose to be enrolled in a First-Year Learning Community (FLC or “flick”) which places them in a group of 24 with other students who share several classes in common. Each FLC is facilitated by an upper-year student mentor and a second-year assistant peer mentor, guided by a staff adviser. This system makes it easier for students to get support, make friends, and form study groups.  Initially designed for commuting students, these programs are now open to all first-year students, except those registered in the College One programs.  More information is available here.
