Message from Year 5

Year 5 students are delving into their research about a specific nation from among the indigenous peoples of Canada. They will practise specific skills such as highlighting, categorizing paragraphs and paraphrasing information in their own words. Eventually, students will compile their research notes and create a group presentation to teach the rest of their classmates about what they’ve discovered. This project will create many learning opportunities. They will learn how to properly cite sources, create effective jot-notes, use technology to create a slideshow, and collaborate with peers to present an oral report.

We’re fortunate to have an indigenous guest speaker, Phil Cote, coming to speak with all Year 5 classes this week. Students will also have the chance to explore primary artifacts from Indigenous Nations during our field trips to the Royal Ontario Museum in December. So please be sure to ask your sons what they are learning each week.

As part of our Year 5′s  “Where we are in place and time” inquiry into indigenous peoples, we’re planning a trip to the Royal Ontario Museum. Form 5H and 5F are scheduled for Wednesday, Dec. 6 and 5M is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 7. Students will explore the main features of communities of First Peoples in Canada through the ROM collections. Students will identify and compare how pre-contact First Nation Peoples’ cultures met physical and social needs, use original objects to investigate different historical points of view and analyze examples of interaction between indigenous peoples and European explorers.  Please read and return the permission form posted above.

“Pourquoi tales” address the reasons why nature or animals have specific characteristics. After reading and identifying key characteristics of pourquoi tales, students will immerse themselves in the writing process and be encouraged to unleash their imaginations. From the decline of unicorns to why the sea is salty, students will create stories to explain the mysteries of the world. After writing rough drafts and participating in writing conferences, students will be expected to independently edit their work using provided feedback before completing a final copy.

In math, students are exploring geometry. They will be learning to copy and measure angles, triangles and polygons using special tools (compass, protractor and ruler). If your son is going to be absent and miss an important instructional lesson, please consider having him watch the appropriate video from Khan Academy. Even if your son has been in class, the videos and activities from Khan Academy can provide additional practise to help consolidate new skills. Also, students who’d like to challenge themselves can select new concepts and skills to explore, beyond those addressed in the classroom. In addition, two other websites may be of interest to you: Calculation Nation (sponsored by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics) or Mathantics.

These are busy times. During the lead up to the winter break, please encourage your sons to remain focused and prepared for learning each day. Thank you for your continued support.
