Civic engagement for UCC boarders

Civic Engagement

At the evening community meeting, four members of the boarding student leadership team made a presentation that may alter the way boarders approach civic engagement for decades to come, on Thursday, Nov. 15.

Elliott McDermott, Vlad Chindea, Charles Deng, Gianluca Iannantuono and Maxime Barbeau Di Meo presented a new after-school activity for boarders. The idea was created by the student leadership committee from last school year. Bthis group represented the full committee that solidified the program over the last few weeks. They have worked closely with CAS Director Deirdre Timusk, and with Residential Assistant Denise Hui Bon Hoa to make the program a reality.

For the past six years, all boarders have been held to an expectation that they would be involved in a co-curricular program for two terms out of three during the school year. Until last night, the only choices were sports teams and theatre productions. These were the only programs that met the time commitment that satisfied the senior boarding house advisers.

Check the slideshow for the component parts; as of January 2018 boys will be able to add civic engagement (community service) to their co-curricular options. The student leadership team is looking for superior candidates to be involved in this start-up program. The boys in boarding were made aware of the application process to be accepted into the program  Stay tuned in the coming weeks. A very exciting new venture for UCC boarders has been created by the Class of 2018′s student leadership team.
